Haitian President Moise assassinated at home

Haitian President Jovenel Moise was assassinated in his home early this morning, July 7, in an incident that threatens to further destabilize the poorest country in the Americas, which is already facing a dual political and security crisis.

AFP said President Moise was assassinated, according to an announcement by Haiti’s interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph. He said, “The president was assassinated at his home by English and Spanish-speaking foreigners.

They attacked the official residence of the President of the Republic,” he added. The interim prime minister assured that the country’s “security situation is under control.

Prime Minister Joseph also said the president’s wife was injured in the attack at around 1 a.m. local time (5 a.m. GMT) and is being treated in hospital. He called on people to remain calm and said police and military forces would maintain order.

The assassination comes after the Dominican Republic ordered the “immediate closure” of its border with Haiti today, Wednesday, and both London and Washington condemned the incident.
