Delta variant virus wreaks havoc in Moscow with record number of deaths in a single day

Russia has been ravaged by a Delta variant of Wuhan pneumonia (novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19) that originated in India, with a surge in confirmed cases of Wuhan pneumonia (novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19).

AFP reports that the new record in Moscow comes just a day after St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city and host of the UEFA Euro 2020 soccer tournament, set a new record for the number of deaths in a single day since the outbreak began when dozens of Finnish fans traveled to the tournament last week and contracted the disease.

Russia has seen a surge in confirmed cases since mid-June, with 599 new deaths in the last 24 hours and a total of 133,282 deaths, according to official figures on Sunday, as the number of confirmed cases rose by 25,38, bringing the total number of infected cases to 5.4 million.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Saturday that Moscow has been a hotspot for the epidemic in Russia, with about 2,000 patients being hospitalized daily, noting that only a rapid, mass vaccination can stop the outbreak.
