As more and more Communist Party fundamentalists returned to the revolutionary cause, the extreme leftists and members of the student and labor movements within the Party became targets of official repression, and the arrests of the Gang of Four, once seen as a symbol of the righting of the course, forced the authorities to focus on maintaining stability.
Mao’s wife Jiang Qing, Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan, and Wang Hongwen, known as the “Gang of Four,” were arrested on October 6, 1976, ending the 10-year catastrophe of the Cultural Revolution. The anniversary, which 44 years ago was officially described by Chinese authorities as a day to set things right, was once again Tuesday (Oct. 6) as a sensitive day to focus on maintaining stability because of the shadow of the violent revolution.
It was also a day of escalating repression and stabilization of the extreme left in China, following the events of the Shenzhen Jia Shi labor movement. Many former Maoists from Xuzhou, Zhengzhou, and Chengdu have been kept incommunicado by the Chinese government.
According to Chen Hongtao, a member of the leftist media, days like 5.16, the anniversary of the launch of the Cultural Revolution, and October 6, which is considered by the extreme left as the date of the coup, have become sensitive days, and key figures are kept close to them.
Chen Hongtao said: Yeah, very normal ah, we do not say that what the two sessions ah, the party congress ah, the plenary session ah this time, you like this day yesterday, October 6, and the anniversary of the Cultural Revolution, 5.16, this is the so-called political sensitive node well, will be more sensitive to some of the key figures, through various forms, to give you greetings. Some of them will be directly on duty. For example, in Xuzhou, there is a man named Meng Xianda, he is every time such a sensitive time, the front and back doors of his home, will be put on the car, blocking the door, people can not get out.
Chen Hongtao said that the extreme leftists are being stabilized because they believe that the current Communist regime is no longer the same and therefore need to continue the revolution, which will naturally be suppressed by the authorities.
Chen Hongtao said, “There is a big difference between what they say and what they essentially are. The reason for the Cultural Revolution is very simple: the Communist Party has changed its colors since it gained power. That’s why the people were mobilized to supervise the ruling party from the bottom up. The Marxist principle is that it has the right to continue the revolution.
The Marxist principle of Marxism is to continue the revolution. The ultra-leftist from Zhengzhou, Mr. Yuan, said they believed that the arrest of Jiang Qing was a coup, and that a bloody purge of the leftists was carried out in the name of “overthrowing the Gang of Four,” which resulted in the death of thousands of leftists.
Mr. Yuan said: I also posted an article on the Internet yesterday, that is, don’t forget October 6, October 6 is the day Hua Guofeng launched the coup d’état and arrested Jiang Qing and the others, the date of the coup. It was a brutal suppression of too many leftists. There were tens of thousands of people who were killed. I don’t know how many people were killed, for example, in Zhejiang alone, their statistics list, just in the police patrol room and detention center were forced to die, more than 2,000 people were killed. I can’t talk to you now.
Another former rebel leader from Chengdu, Mr. Zhang, refused to answer the phone. He has also told us that he has been a longtime official.
Mr. Rao, a former head of the Political and Legal Affairs Committee, confirmed that if you threaten or even challenge the authority of the current government, both leftists and rightists will be suppressed.
Mr. Rao said: “The repression now is the same for all parties, whether you’re a Maoist, a leftist, or a rightist. Whether you are a Maoist, a leftist or a rightist, as long as there is any big movement, it is very vigilant and is the object of their surveillance.
In recent years, as the authorities have been advocating the occupation of campuses by Marxism, many Maoist students have appeared in universities, including Peking University and Tsinghua University, who believe in the fundamentalist ideology of the Communist Party. One of the landmark events was the Shenzhen Jiasi labor movement, which was swiftly suppressed by the authorities. The official crackdown was swift, and the list of leftists arrested and detained in disguised form remains unclear to date.
