The Ilham Tohti Institute in Germany recently restored thousands of articles from the Uighur Online website founded by Ilham Tohti and posted a new link to the site.
In 2006, Uyghur scholar Ilham Tohti founded Uyghur Online to expose the discriminatory treatment of Uyghurs in Xinjiang. The website has since been heavily monitored by the Chinese government and was shut down several times before Ilham’s arrest in 2014. That same year, authorities sentenced Ilham to life in prison for “separatist crimes.
The institute said a group of young volunteers successfully restored more than 3,000 articles published on Uighur Online after a year and a half of effort. They hope the restoration project will help free Ilhamu.
Ilham was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize again this year, but was not elected.
