Chinese Professor Mao Bo Pleads Guilty in Huawei Technology Theft Case

Bo Mao, a Chinese professor accused of stealing technology for Huawei, pleaded guilty Friday to lying to federal agents, closing part of a U.S. Justice Department investigation into alleged illegal behavior in the United States by the Chinese tech giant and academics with ties to China.

Last fall, federal prosecutors in Brooklyn charged the professor with conspiracy to commit wire fraud for allegedly using his position as an academic researcher at the University of Texas at Arlington to secretly develop Huawei’s technology, according to international media reports on Dec. 5. The charge will be dropped as part of a guilty plea.

Maubert pleaded guilty to lying to federal agents about his knowledge of the unique technology at the University of Texas. Under the agreement discussed in court, he will be sentenced to time served plus supervised release.
