SAIC-GM-Wuling mastered hot forming ultra-high strength steel technology

Recently, the scientific research project “Key Technology and Industrialization Application of Hot Stamping Materials and Parts for Automobiles” jointly developed by SAIC-GM-Wuling, Baosteel, Shanghai University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Ningbo Heli Mold Technology Co.

It is reported that hot stamping of steel plate is an advanced forming technology developed in the past 30 years, and the tensile strength of formed stamping parts can reach more than 1500MPa. Four units from Shanghai Jiaotong University and Ningbo Heli Mold Technology Co. Ltd. carry out research and development of key core technologies of hot stamping and tackling difficulties, and in 2015 established the “SAIC-GM-Wuling-Baosteel Million Platform Joint Studio” to validate technical applications on the million vehicle platform. Through the industry-university-research mode, SAIC-GM-Wuling has deeply opened up the innovation chain, industrial chain and value chain, rapidly transformed scientific research investment into technical applications, and developed ultra-high-strength parts to reach more than 1500MPa, which is the highest strength material currently applied in the car, and can significantly improve the safety performance of the body and lightweight level, and in early 2020, the project technology was fully put into industrial application. According to statistics, thermoforming technology to lead the high-quality development of Guangxi’s auto industry, driving SAIC-GM-Wuling to increase economic benefits, a total of 6.896 billion yuan of new output value, a total of 635 million yuan of new profits.

In addition, due to hot forming high strength steel to create parts with higher strength, more able to optimize the structure and quantity of body parts, to reduce the cost of the vehicle and achieve the effect of vehicle lightweight. At present, SGMW’s Wuling Kaige, New Baojun RS-7, New Baojun RM-5, New Baojun RS-3, New Baojun RC-5, New Energy E300, Wuling Hongguang and other models all apply hot stamping ultra-high strength steel. The number of single-vehicle hot stamping parts has also increased from the initial 2 pieces to more than 10 pieces.

In Wuling Kaijie, for example, the application proportion of high strength steel in the body is 63%, and the application proportion of aviation grade ultra-high strength steel is 31.53%. In the body of the front beam, A-pillar reinforcing plate, B-pillar reinforcing plate, door anti-collision beam and other more than 10 key parts are used hot forming ultra-high strength steel, accounting for 10.1%, this ratio has surpassed many luxury brands of high-end models, can significantly improve the collision performance and ensure car safety.

In the future, the percentage of SGMW’s models using hot-formed ultra-high-strength steel will double that of Wuling Kaijie, reaching about 20 percent. For example, the future Baojun 730S (the current Baojun 730 reworked or replaced) will launch more than 20 key components of hot-formed ultra-high-strength steel.
