Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris has suspended all campaign travel until next Monday, after Joe Biden’s presidential campaign announced Thursday (Oct. 15) that two people associated with the campaign have tested positive for the new coronavirus.
The Biden campaign said Biden was not exposed to the new coronavirus, but he and running mate Harris campaigned together in the southwestern U.S. state of Arizona on Oct. 8.
Since then, the campaign says, Biden and Harris have tested negative for the new coronavirus several times.
Liz Allen, Harris’ communications director, tested positive for the new coronavirus on Wednesday, as did a flight crew member who traveled with him to the Southwest to campaign, the Biden campaign said.
Campaign manager Jen O’Malley said Biden and Harris did not need to be quarantined under Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, but “out of an abundance of caution,” Harris will suspend travel activities for a few days.
The infection of the two men is the first time the Biden campaign has had a neo-coronavirus crisis. For months, the Biden campaign has taken strict precautions that have been ridiculed by political rival President Donald Trump. President Trump continued to ridicule the Biden camp even after he, First Lady Melania Trump, and others in the White House contracted the new coronavirus.
Last month, during a televised debate, Trump said, “I don’t wear a mask like he does. Every time you see him, he’s wearing a mask.”
Harris will not be campaigning in Ohio and North Carolina, two states she had planned to visit next before presidential election day on Nov. 3.
