Indian Media Interview with Taiwan’s Foreign Minister, China Protests the Media’s Violation of the “One-China” Principle

The Chinese Embassy in New Delhi issued a stern protest on Friday (Oct. 16) following the broadcast of an interview with Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Wu Zhao Xie on India Today, criticizing the media outlet for supporting Wu’s remarks on “Taiwan independence” and blatantly violating the one-China principle.

In the 25-minute interview broadcast on Thursday (Oct. 15), Wu spoke on a wide range of issues, including bilateral relations between Taiwan and India, areas of cooperation between Taiwan and India, Taiwan’s bid for participation in international organizations, the South China Sea issue, and the Quadripartite Security Dialogue. Host Geeta Mohan also asked about the common threat that Taiwan and India face from China, as well as the Chinese Embassy in India’s interference with press freedom in India and the Indian people’s celebration of Taiwan’s Double Ten National Day.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted on its official website an interview with Wu Zhaoxiang on India Today, but made no mention of how Wu responded to the host’s questions about China.

In the past few years, China has been a major contributor to the development of Taiwan’s economy, and the country’s economy has grown rapidly.

In the past few years, Taiwan has faced bullying by China, which has used its political and economic power to press other countries not to get involved in the Taiwan issue, a practice that has become increasingly serious in recent years, Wu Zhao Xie said. Wu said he was glad that India and the Indian media ignored China’s pressure and celebrated the Double Ten National Day with the people of Taiwan.

The Chinese Embassy in New Delhi made a serious representation to the media immediately after the interview was broadcast and expressed its strong opposition.

The Chinese Embassy in India posted a stern statement from JI Rong, the embassy’s spokesperson, on its official website on June 16. It said that “a certain Indian TV station broadcast an interview with Wu Zhao Xie, the head of the foreign affairs department of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Taiwan, to justify his remarks on ‘Taiwan independence’, blatantly contradicting the one-China principle and the consistent position of the Indian government, and provoking the bottom line of the one-China principle”, the spokesman said. Beijing has made serious representations and expressed strong opposition.

Beijing is once again trying to tell the Indian media what to say when it comes to Taiwan, Taiwan News reported on Saturday (June 17). Earlier, it was reported that several Indian journalists confirmed that they continue to receive messages from the Chinese Embassy asking them to abide by the one-China principle and to “instruct” them on how to report on Taiwan.

In this interview with Wu Zhaosi, host Mohan asked a question about the Chinese threat. Wu Zhaoxie replied that today not only Taiwan faces this threat, but also the countries surrounding the East China Sea, South China Sea, Japan, and the South China Sea, as well as India on the China-India border, and that the problem is the authoritarian expansionism of the Chinese Communist authorities.

Relations between India and China have taken a sharp turn for the worse since June 29 of this year, when bloodshed broke out between Indian and Chinese troops along the border. The two countries accused each other of provocation. The Indian government has since blocked more than 200 Chinese apps, including such popular products as TikTok (Shakespeare International) and WeChat. The public perception of China in India is very negative, and there is a trend of boycotting Chinese products.

Recently, the Indian media and Indian citizens seem to be informally moving closer to Taiwan, which is also actively developing bilateral relations with India. Taiwan and India are natural and complementary partners, and the two sides should think seriously about how to further cooperate on issues such as supply chains in the long term to the mutual benefit of each other, Wu Zhao Xie said in an interview on Indian television today. He called on the Indian government to take Taiwan seriously and work together to contribute to the international community.

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan formally established the “Taiwan-India Parliamentarians Friendship Association” on Saturday, and Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan President Yu Shyi-kun also plans to lead a legislative delegation to India for in-depth exchanges and visits after the end of the neoconavirus epidemic.
