In the first half of this month, the North Korean Workers’ Party celebrated its 75th anniversary and held a massive military parade in Pyongyang, where North Korean leader Kim Jong-un wept during the parade and apologized to the people during his speech. They also said that the Kim family is very cunning and reminded that Kim Jong-un had killed his brother Kim Jong-nam and other relatives.
The New York Post reports that North Korea is currently experiencing U.S. sanctions, food shortages due to flooding, and an epidemic of pneumonia in Wuhan, where North Korea expert David Maxwell says the people are suffering and many families are starving, but Kim Jong-un is spending all his money on missiles and weapons, which is not helping.
The paper noted that Kim Il Sung founded the North Korean regime and that he was loved by the people for his “people-friendly” image while in power, especially for children. David also said that Kim Il-sung can be called the Washington of North Korea, and even defectors miss his time in power, so imitating Kim Il-sung’s image is a way to consolidate power and maintain his image.
Sean King, an Asia expert at the New York-based political consulting firm Parker Strategy, said that it is also a strategy for Kim Jong-un to put on weight because it will make him look more friendly and fatherly, as well as more like Kim Il-sung, who shed tears and apologized to the people at the party’s military parade in order to stay in power.
However, Kim pointed out that the Kim family has done everything to stay in power, such as ordering the execution of his uncle Jang Seong-taek and the alleged assassination of his half-brother Kim Jong-nam. Greg Scarlatoiu, executive director of the North Korean Human Rights Commission, also believes that the Kim family is very smart and cunning, and that Kim Jong-un is using his grandfather Kim Il-sung’s image to get the people on his side.
