Pakistani fishermen unhappy with government’s approval of Chinese fishermen’s fishing rights

According to Deutsche Welle, several fishermen’s groups in Pakistan have recently filed a complaint in court to stop the Pakistani government from authorizing Chinese fishermen to fish in the country’s deep waters.

According to the report, the Pakistani fishermen found 12 Chinese trawlers docked at a seaport in Karachi, which they believe indicates that the Pakistani government has granted fishing rights to the Chinese companies.

The fishermen are concerned that this practice will affect the livelihoods of Pakistan’s 2 million fishermen. They believe that the Pakistani government is only interested in pleasing the Chinese government and not their livelihoods.

The Pakistani government has not responded to the fishermen’s questions. Pakistani fishermen and industry associations suspect that permits have been secretly issued to Chinese fishing boats. Some in the Pakistani government have told the media on condition of anonymity that there is no outright denial that licenses have been issued to the Chinese.

Environmentalists, on the other hand, are concerned about the damage to the marine ecosystem caused by deep-sea fishing.
