Tesla cars are restricted by government departments in China. The net rumor is that the Zhejiang government administrative center security office recently issued a notice to thank Tesla cars to enter the administrative center. Last week, Beijing, Shanghai and other government agencies also passed out internal notification that Tesla cars are not allowed to enter the scope of government agencies.
On the afternoon of May 24, a picture of “Notice on the refusal of Tesla vehicles provincial administrative center” was circulated on the Internet. The notice reads, due to the lack of parking space and other reasons, from May 31, 2021 0:00 Tesla vehicles into the provincial administrative center (including three yards), please notify all units to all authorities. The signature is “Zhejiang Administrative Center Security Office”, the date of May 21, 2021.
Many netizens believe that although the above notice has not been confirmed, it is very likely. Two months ago, the Chinese military banned Tesla cars from parking in military facilities or dormitory areas.
Speaking to Radio Free Asia this Tuesday (25), Guangzhou dissident Wang Aizhong said that Tesla’s dilemma may be more serious.
“It’s true that the situation is much more serious than what was expected when Tesla first entered China to set up a factory. There has been a very swift, officially led nationalist sentiment in China over the years. This includes a private boycott of Tesla, and even a push by the official media. Some government departments are now imposing restrictions on Tesla that are beyond what was expected when Tesla came to China to set up a factory.”
On Monday and Tuesday, some mainland media reporters called the administrative center of Zhejiang Province on a number of public phone numbers and received the reply that “they have not received this notice, nor have they seen it posted in their units. A reporter from the Covered News checked the website of the Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government and found that the Office of the General Office of the Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government has a security office, but no staff could be contacted.
China’s military has ordered a ban on Tesla cars entering military facilities
The Chinese military had issued a notice banning Tesla cars from parking around military facilities and military compounds for security reasons.
According to Reuters on Friday, staff at at least two government agencies in Beijing and Shanghai received verbal instructions from officials in charge not to park Tesla cars in their office areas. But as of now, it is unclear whether the ban involves all government agencies or is simply a measure taken by administrative officials on their own.
However, the recent news of Tesla’s intention to set up a factory in Europe suggests that Tesla will not expand its investment in China.
Wang Aizhong said: “Some time ago, Tesla repaid its bank loan in advance and should not be expanding its factory in Shanghai. Tesla can be said to be an iconic multinational large enterprises over the years, since the trade war between China and the United States. Tesla stopped the expansion of the factory, and even do not rule out the future to move a large number of operations out of China.”
Several foreign media outlets have recently reported that Tesla is now considering building factories in other parts of the world, and is about to set up to conduct business in Russia and consider building a factory there, in addition to the German plant that will go into production later this year.
Tesla has not decided whether it will increase investment in China
Tesla CEO Musk has publicly said that it is good for Tesla to establish operations in Russia, where there is a lot of talent and a lot of energy. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that he still hopes Putin and Musk will meet, but no preparations have been made for that.
Wang Aizhong warned that once Tesla pulls out of China, it will have a profound impact on foreign investment into the country. Mr. Jiang, a scholar from Zhejiang, told the station that China has been implementing reform and opening up for more than 40 years, but the leaders are only concerned with small calculations and are unwilling to integrate into the world:.
“Socialist ideology, they eat the sugar coating of economic globalization and diversification while trying to beat back democratization, openness and fair competition in what they see as shells. During these thirty years, the Communist Party has developed its own economy with the help of the world economy and has copied the advanced technology of various countries. Then he used that benefit to try to expand communist ideology.”
Mr. Jiang said the government hopes to master Tesla’s advanced technology from it by introducing Tesla cars.
“After learning the technology and copying others’ technology, drive them out. But whether companies like Tesla will continue or repeat the mistakes of their predecessors in this conflict, then we need to see the future results.”
Tesla has been in a lot of trouble in China recently. During the Shanghai Auto Show in April, a woman defended her rights at Tesla’s exhibition area, which was heavily reported by Chinese official media, and Tesla was blamed for “bullying customers”, followed by the news that Tesla returned the loan early and abandoned the expansion of its factory in Shanghai.
