Shenzhen’s skyscraper, the Saige Square Building, shook several times last week, causing public concern. Shenzhen officials on Tuesday (May 25) issued a “notice to the people”: “the overall performance of the building structure to meet the requirements”.
The building’s shaking alarmed officials in Guangdong province. Chinese media reported that Guangdong Party Secretary Li Xi, Governor Ma Xingrui, and Wang Weizhong, deputy secretary of the provincial Party committee and secretary of the Shenzhen municipal Party committee, went to Shenzhen last Saturday (May 22) to “investigate” the situation, and Li Xi said he wanted to “insist on life first, safety first, scientific, precise, serious and proper response and disposal work.”
He also said that the shaking of the Sage Building, should respect science, respect for experts, as soon as possible to come up with scientific and authoritative conclusions of the investigation.
Shenzhen official WeChat platform “Shenzhen release” on Tuesday (May 25) said that professional institutions on the Sage building housing settlement, tilt rate and acceleration and other conditions for continuous monitoring, the expert group said that as of noon that day, “the test data is normal, not exceed the corresponding standard requirements “.
“Shenzhen release” also said: “professional institutions have combined the latest technical conditions to complete the building overall structural system modeling and review of the verification, that the overall performance of the building structure to meet the requirements.”
Sage Plaza Building is one of the landmark buildings in Shenzhen, the building has 79 floors, with a total height of 355.8 meters. The building has been shaking for three consecutive days since May 18 and was temporarily closed from 0000 hours on May 21.
An Iranian businessman told AFP that he was on the fifty-third floor when the building began to shake last week. “I saw something moving and when I got up, I saw everything moving,” he said.
“We got out pretty quickly after that,” he said, “and now, we don’t know how to do business or how to respond to …… everything.”
He also said the building had been shaken “a few times” before.
Across the road, an electronics trader also told AFP that he had previously heard complaints about the building shaking, “but not as bad as this time.”
AFP added that building collapses or accidents are not uncommon in China and are often linked to lax construction standards or corruption.
Chinese official media Xinhua News Agency recently reported that industry insiders said that Sage Plaza gathered many electronic components merchants, the building shaking incident, may have an impact on the receipt and delivery of hard drives, graphics cards and other products, which in turn will cause some impact on the market.
