Pfizer, Modena and Johnson & Johnson Promise to Supply 3.5 Billion Doses of New Crown (C.C.V.) Vaccine to Poor Countries
U.S. vaccine makers Pfizer, Modena and Johnson & Johnson said Friday at the Group of 20 (G20) health summit that they will supply a combined total of about 3.5 billion doses of the vaccine to poorer countries this year and next, selling it at cost or at a discount.
Pfizer will ship 2 billion doses of the new crown (Chinese Communist virus) vaccine to those countries over the next 18 months, with 1 billion of those doses to be delivered this year, the chairman and chief executive of U.S. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Borla said at the meeting, AFP and Central News Agency reported.
Modena Chief Executive Officer Bancel announced that “up to 95 million doses” of the vaccine will be shipped to poorer countries this year and “up to 900 million doses” will be supplied next year, including the portion to be delivered through the Global Access Facility for New Coronavirus (GACV) vaccine.
Johnson & Johnson Vice Chairman and Chief Scientific Officer Steve Stowers said they had previously signed an agreement with the Global Access Facility for the New Champion vaccine to supply up to 200 million doses of the vaccine this year, and are currently discussing “the possibility of an additional 300 million doses…up to a total of 500 million doses.”
Earlier Friday at the opening of the summit, the European Union also pledged to donate 100 million doses of vaccines to poorer countries.
