On May 20, the European Parliament passed a resolution with a high number of votes, freezing the recently concluded China-EU investment agreement until the Chinese Communist Party lifts sanctions against EU personalities. Experts believe that this means that the CCP’s multiple attempts have failed.
The European Parliament on May 20 passed a resolution by 599 votes in favor, 30 against and 58 abstentions to freeze the ratification procedure of the China-EU Investment Agreement until the retaliatory sanctions imposed by the Chinese Communist Party on European officials are lifted.
The resolution states that the retaliatory sanctions imposed by the Chinese Communist Party in March have caused a setback in Sino-European relations and that all EU institutions must unite to resist the Chinese Communist Party’s attacks on European democracy and defend common European values.
Blue said, “This is a process of gradual awakening, taking such a big concerted action on the EU-China agreement, which shows that many, many people in the West have started to awaken, many, many political leaders in Western societies, are gradually realizing the threat that the Chinese Communist Party is increasingly posing to the West.”
The resolution also mentions that China-Europe relations can no longer continue as before in light of the CCP’s crackdown on the Uighurs and democracy in Hong Kong, as well as its military intimidation of the Taiwan Strait.
U.S.-based current affairs commentator Tang Jingyuan: “This freeze on the China-EU investment agreement has a significant impact on China-EU relations, and the freezing of this agreement is unlikely to be resumed, at least in the short term, meaning that economic relations between China and Europe are starting to move in the direction of decoupling.”
U.S.-based current affairs commentator Tang Jingyuan said that the Chinese Communist Party’s attempt to reach an economic alliance with the EU has failed, as has its attempt to use the EU to divide U.S.-European relations.
Tang Jingyuan: “The EU says it wants to re-examine the relationship between the EU and the CCP, representing that the EU will henceforth link human rights and trade, and this will become an important principle in the EU’s dealings with the CCP in the economic field, and it is likely to be long-term.”
The resolution to freeze the CEIBS was supported by all major political parties in the European Parliament.
The head of the European Parliament’s delegation for relations with China, Boreham, said, “There are many reasons to oppose this agreement because the Chinese Communist Party wants to control freedom of expression worldwide, and we will not deal with the EU-China Comprehensive Investment Agreement as long as we remain under Chinese sanctions.”
German Environmental Protection Minister Reinhard Buetikofer also said, “The Chinese Communist Party wants this agreement very much, but they have made a mistake and underestimated the determination of the European Parliament to defend European interests and values.”
Blue said, “All people, you have illusions about the CCP, in the end you must be the one who suffers, this is the lesson of history, the West has not really suffered from the CCP, they have all kinds of illusions about the CCP, resulting in their appeasement policy towards the CCP, today when the CCP is strong, the real side of the CCP is shown in front of them, they only start to realize this problem.”
After seven years and 35 rounds of formal negotiations, the CCP and the EU signed the China-EU Comprehensive Investment Agreement (CIA) last December, which needed to be ratified by the European Parliament before it could become official law, but was finally “botched” by the CCP itself.
In March this year, the Chinese Communist Party retaliated by sanctioning a number of European Parliament officials for human rights abuses, triggering a backlash from the EU Executive Committee to the European Parliament and a sudden cooling of Sino-European relations.
Lan said: “What the Chinese Communist Party thinks is a small thing, in the eyes of Western diplomats see this thing is too big, you do not have the most basic respect for Western countries, this is what the EU sees in the eyes, diplomacy is a continuation of internal affairs, how you treat the Chinese people at home, you will use the same tactics for the international community in the future.”
On May 19, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian declared that the China-EU Investment Agreement was a “mutually beneficial and win-win” agreement and hoped that the European Parliament would ratify it as soon as possible. He also denied the existence of human rights violations in Xinjiang.
Tang Jingyuan: “The Chinese Communist Party has officially responded to this matter, and the response is that it does not think there is anything wrong with the sanctions imposed on the EU, that is, the bullying diplomatic line of war-wolf diplomacy, and it is impossible to make it kneel and soften and take the initiative to lift the sanctions against the EU.”
Several MEPs and EU officials have said that the chances of the European Parliament approving the CETA are very slim if the Chinese Communist Party does not lift the sanctions against the EU.
