Brazilian health authorities announced Wednesday that one volunteer died after receiving the vaccine as part of a trial program for a new coronavirus vaccine conducted in Brazil by British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. According to Reuters, the Federal University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, which assisted with the testing, the deceased was a Brazilian national. The Brazilian side said that the vaccine testing will continue. A spokesman for the University of Oxford said in a statement: “After careful evaluation of the Brazilian case, there are no safety concerns associated with the clinical trial. Independent reviewers outside the Brazilian regulatory authorities have recommended that the trial continue.
The company had previously suspended all regional testing of the vaccine in the United Kingdom after a volunteer developed a seizure after receiving the vaccine. A subsequent review by UK regulatory authorities concluded that there was insufficient evidence to link the illness to the test vaccine, and AstraZeneca was allowed to resume testing in the UK.
The new coronavirus outbreak in France continues to worsen. There were 284 new cases of severe illness on Wednesday, and the total number of deaths has exceeded 34,000, reaching 34,048; 166 new deaths were reported. There were 26,676 new confirmed infections in France, up from 20,000 the day before.
According to Spanish official data, Spain has become the first country in the European Union to have more than 1 million confirmed cases of the new coronavirus. The Czech government on Wednesday ordered the closure of most stores and services and attempted to limit all activities to essential trips, such as work and medical appointments, to stem the rapid spread of the epidemic. The measures will take effect at 6 a.m. on November 22 and will remain in effect until November 3. Czech First Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Jan Hamacek confirmed to Reuters today that he has tested positive for the virus.
The Polish Ministry of Health reported on Wednesday that an additional 10,400 people were diagnosed, a record high for a single day, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 202,579. Another 130 people died from the disease, bringing the total number of deaths to 3,851.
