Belgian Foreign Minister Takes Intensive Care with Epidemic

Belgian Foreign Minister Sophie Wilmes, who served as caretaker prime minister during the first wave of the 2019 coronavirus illness (COVID-19) epidemic, has been admitted to the intensive care unit after being diagnosed last week, Belgian officials said today.

Wilmes, 45, tested positive for the virus last week and was quarantined on her own, but her condition worsened and she was admitted to a Brussels hospital on the evening of the 21st.

A spokesperson for Wilmes said, “She is conscious and can communicate with people.” Her spokesperson also confirmed that Wilmeth was being treated in the intensive care unit. Sources from Wilmeth’s office said her condition is “stable.

The new Belgian prime minister, Alexander de Croo, who succeeded Wilmes on October 1, tweeted that he wished Wilmes a “speedy recovery”.

De Croo tweeted: “No one is immune to this dangerous virus. Together, we can defeat the coronavirus.”

Several senior European officials have been infected, with Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg testing positive on the same day as Wilmeth.
