After the sudden closure of the Hong Kong Economic, Trade and Cultural Office in Taiwan on Tuesday (18), a spokesman for the SAR government only gave a public explanation for the closure on Friday (21), saying, ” In recent years, Taiwan has repeatedly and violently interfered in Hong Kong affairs, causing irreparable harm to Hong Kong-Taiwan relations.”
The spokesman accused Taiwan of launching a “special project to help Hong Kong” and unilaterally setting up the “Taiwan-Hong Kong Service Exchange Office” under the Taiwan-Hong Kong Economic and Cultural Cooperation Council (THEC) to provide support to violent protesters and those who undermine Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability. The spokesman said that Taiwan’s provocative actions run counter to the original intent of the Council to promote exchanges and cooperation between Hong Kong and Taiwan, and are inconsistent with the original purpose of the Council’s establishment. The SAR government expressed its deep regret at the actions of the Taiwan side.
The spokesman also said that the staff of the Economic and Trade Office has also been intimidated by radicals on the island of Taiwan, all kinds of situations to stay in the staff face uncertainty, to take forward the space for exchanges between Hong Kong and Taiwan in various fields is also increasingly narrowed in the shadow, the Hong Kong Government to protect the safety and rights of Hong Kong personnel in Taiwan, decided to temporarily close the Economic and Trade Office, and all Hong Kong personnel have also left Taiwan to return to Hong Kong.
