North Korea rejects 6 shipments of South Korean epidemic prevention supplies

Six shipments of epidemic prevention supplies approved for the South Korean militia this year were rejected by the North and could not be delivered. This is according to a data made public by Chun Hae-chul, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea’s National Assembly Foreign Affairs Unification Committee.

Specifically, the Ministry of Unification approved six shipments of 1.76 billion won worth of supplies to the DPRK from March 31 to August 12, including disinfectants, masks, protective clothing, diagnostic kits, and thermal imaging cameras that were exempted from sanctions by the United Nations. The South Korean Ministry of Unification said that the goods were not delivered to the North.

Yonhap reported that the South Korean National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee rejected the South’s offer of assistance because it believed that the DPRK had received unofficial assistance from China and Russia and might be concerned about the spread of the neo-coronavirus during the delivery of the supplies.

Chun Hae-chul said that given the characteristics of infectious diseases, it is necessary for the ROK and North Korea to cooperate on epidemic prevention. He also instructed the relevant authorities to prepare in advance to provide assistance to the DPRK when the new coronavirus vaccine and treatment agent become available based on the attitude and humanitarian principles of the DPRK.
