Converged official data show that as of 10:00 GMT 20 (6:00 p.m. Taiwan 20), at least 3,410,488 people worldwide have died from 2019 viral disease (COVID-19), with at least 164.8 million 5,270 cases confirmed.
The vast majority of those infected have recovered from the outbreak to date in China in December 2019. However, some people continue to feel symptoms for weeks or even months after recovery.
The above figures are based on daily statistics provided by national health authorities, but do not include subsequent re-estimates provided by the statistical units of three countries: Russia, Spain and the United Kingdom. The cumulative number of confirmed cases is only a fraction of the actual number of people infected, as many mildly ill or asymptomatic patients remain undetected.
On the 19th, 13,774 new deaths and 646,174 confirmed cases were reported worldwide. According to the latest notification data, the countries with the highest number of new deaths were India (3,874), Brazil (2,641) and the United States (648), in that order.
The United States remains the country with the most severe epidemic, with a cumulative total of 587,874 deaths and 33,026,741 confirmed cases.
Other countries with severe outbreaks include Brazil (441,691 deaths and 15,812,055 confirmed cases), India (287,122 deaths and 25,772,440 confirmed cases), Mexico (228,500 deaths and 2,387,512 confirmed cases) and the United Kingdom (127,694 deaths and 4,452,527 confirmed cases).
As a percentage of the population, Hungary had the highest mortality rate, with 304 deaths per 100,000 people, followed by the Czech Republic (280), Bosnia-Herzegovina (277), North Macedonia (252) and Montenegro (250).
Regionally, there were 1,116,560 deaths and 52,537,114 confirmed cases in Europe; 993,635 deaths and 31,280,754 confirmed cases in Latin America and the Caribbean; and a total of 612,920 deaths and 34,367,074 confirmed cases in the United States and Canada.
In Asia, there were 428,996 deaths and 33,523,606 confirmed cases; in the Middle East, there were 139,052 deaths and 8,327,964 confirmed cases; in Africa, there were 127,246 deaths and 4,720,903 confirmed cases; and in Oceania, there were 1079 deaths and 46,856 confirmed cases.
