Israeli-Palestinian conflict takes a turn for the worse with Israeli government and Hamas agreeing to a ceasefire this morning

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict continued for 11 days until Thursday (20), the situation has turned around, the Israeli government and the Palestinian armed group Hamas, both sides have agreed to a ceasefire at 2:00 a.m. local time on Friday (21) (7:00 a.m. Hong Kong time on Friday).

The Israeli military on Thursday still launched more than 100 air strikes against Hamas infrastructure facilities in the Gaza Strip, by the other side fired rockets in return. In the evening of the same day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his security cabinet held an emergency meeting, at which they unanimously approved the cessation of military operations against the Gaza Strip. Later, a Hamas spokesman also confirmed that the organization and the Israeli side reached a ceasefire agreement, mutual ceasefire; and the intermediary of Egypt has informed Hamas supreme leader Haniya of the above ceasefire time. It is reported that Egypt will monitor the ceasefire.

Egypt has ties with both Israel and Hamas, and has been the main mediator in the past and the current conflict in the Gaza Strip; U.S. President Joe Biden has recently pressed Israel for a ceasefire, and before Israel’s ceasefire decision, Biden called Egyptian President Sisi earlier Thursday for the first time since taking office to discuss calling a halt to this round of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Tensions between Israel and Hamas have escalated since May 10 following an Israeli court decision to expel several Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah district of Jerusalem, with thousands of rockets fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip and a barrage of artillery and airstrikes by Israeli forces on the Gaza Strip, resulting in deaths and injuries. At least 232 Palestinians have died in this round of clashes, including 65 children and 39 women, and more than 1,700 people have been injured in Israeli air strikes, while 12 people have been killed in Israel.
