The Breitbart News reported on May 19 that Biden gave a commencement speech at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut on Wednesday, and in bragging about promoting women to leadership positions in the U.S. military, Biden said, “Women can hold up half the sky,” adding that it was a Chinese proverb.
The phrase quoted by the 78-year-old Biden is not a Chinese saying, but a quote from Mao Zedong, the founder of the Chinese Communist Party and a mass murderer. Mao’s quote, “Women can hold up half the sky,” was used to promote the women’s liberation movement in China (Communist Party). By most accounts, the communist dictator Mao Zedong killed as many as 70 to 80 million Chinese people in the last century.
In his 2020 campaign, Biden has repeatedly invoked “women can hold up half the sky” to explain his position on women’s employment. Speaking to a reporter in Arizona last October, Biden said, “Years ago, there was an old Chinese saying, ‘Women can hold up half the sky. A country cannot compete for international economic status unless it has the full participation of women in society.”
Biden also quoted this quote last August to explain why he chose Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) as his running mate. Biden also used the slogan at an August 2020 fundraiser, adding that it was an “old Chinese proverb.
