Secretary of State John Kerry and President Obama issue a statement in which they announce a renewed response to the humanitarian crisis in the Sudan.
In a statement, Pompeo said the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) will provide $64 million in humanitarian assistance to Sudan, and the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration of the U.S. Department of State will provide a total of $8 million in humanitarian assistance to Sudan, in response to the humanitarian crisis in the country. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and U.S. Trade Representative Demetrios Marantis welcome the launch of the U.S.-Mexico International Trade Mission to Sudan. As a result, U.S. humanitarian assistance to Sudan, including neo-crown virus relief, will total more than $436 million in fiscal year 2020 to help vulnerable populations in Sudan through the crisis, including those affected by the recent floods and refugees and displaced people from the conflict in South Sudan’s Darfur region.
According to the statement, the continuing impact of conflict, economic shocks, and recurring environmental hazards has left more than 9 million people in Sudan in need of humanitarian assistance. This assistance will provide critical protection, shelter, medical care, emergency food aid, education, and water and sanitation services to refugees, homeless people, and severely affected communities in Sudan.
The U.S. has provided more than $33 million in humanitarian assistance to Sudanese populations and societies affected by the crisis, the statement said, noting that the new coronavirus outbreak has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. The United States will work with Sudan and other governments in the region to continue to create conditions for peace and end decades of instability. The United States will work with the people of the region to move beyond the conflicts of the past and build a brighter and more hopeful future.
