35 House Republicans vote for bill to create Jan. 6 committee

The Breitbart News reported on May 19 that the House passed H.R. 3233, the National Commission to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol Act, by a vote of 252 to 175. Thirty-five House Republicans voted for the legislation, despite House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) coming out against the bill. The 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach former President Trump all voted in favor.

Rep. Chip Roy (R-Wis.) said on the House floor before the vote that many committees already have the ability to investigate the Jan. 6 incident and that there is absolutely no need to create another committee. His comments represent the thinking of most House Republicans.

Rep. Lance Gooden (D-Calif.) said in a statement after the vote that Pelosi wanted to divert attention from the many crises in the Democratic Party with a bill to create a commission.

Rep. Gooden said, “This partisan legislation is about distracting the American people from the unprecedented crisis at the border, from Biden’s wasteful tax and spending policies, and from the fact that Democrats would rather defend radical Islamic terrorists in Palestine than support our allies in Israel.”

House Republican Leader McCarthy, criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for not negotiating in good faith.
