Spain has declared a state of emergency and imposed a new round of nationwide closures in response to the resurgence of neo-coronavirus infections.
Speaking to the nation on Sunday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said, “The reality is that Europe and Spain are immersed in a second wave of neo-crown pandemic.”
“The situation we are in is extreme.”
Data compiled by the Johns Hopkins University Neo-coronavirus Resource Center show that Spain and France, which have imposed nighttime curfews to curb the spread of the virus, both have more than 1 million new cases of coronavirus.
Colombia also had more than 1 million new cases of coronavirus confirmed on Sunday.
The Latin American country recorded 8,769 new infections from Saturday through Sunday, bringing the total to 1 million cases and 30,000 deaths.
Colombia became the eighth country to reach 1 million new coronavirus cases, following the United States, India, Brazil, Russia, France, Argentina and Spain. France and Spain surpassed that number Friday.
The United States set a record for daily cases Friday, reporting at least 83,000 infections, 6,000 more than the single-day record set on July 16.
Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff, Mark Short’s new crown tested positive and began a quarantine on Saturday, and Pence and his wife tested negative and were in good health, a spokesman said.
The United States continued to lead the world in the number of new coronavirus infections on Sunday, with more than 8.5 million people infected and more than 224,000 deaths, as the outbreak surged in the northern Rocky Mountain states and the Midwest, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, which tracks cases worldwide.
The latest estimate from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation says that unless nearly all Americans wear masks, the U.S. death toll could exceed 500,000 by next February.
This estimate says that if 95 percent of Americans wore masks, the number of possible deaths could drop by 130,000.
The surge in the U.S. is similar to the widespread surge in Europe. Paris, Rome, and other major cities are taking increasingly stringent measures to contain the spread of the virus.
Elsewhere in Europe, the number of infections has risen sharply in Poland, where 13,628 new cases were reported Saturday. Poland’s President Duda was among those who tested positive for the new crown. More lockdowns were imposed in Poland, including the closure of bars and restaurants for two weeks and a shift to distance education for students above the third grade.
As neo-coronavirus infections continue to reach record highs in Belgium, authorities ordered the closure of the country’s cultural facilities on Saturday and announced an extended curfew beginning Monday. Brussels, home to the European Union and NATO, is one of the hardest hit areas of the country. According to Johns Hopkins University, Belgium has one of the highest per capita neonatal mortality rates in the world, with the death toll now exceeding 10,700.
According to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University, the death toll in Germany exceeds 10,000, indicating that nearly 435,000 people are currently infected in the country.
Russia reported 16,521 cases of new coronavirus infections on Saturday. Last Friday Russia hit a record high of more than 17,300 cases. There are nearly 1.5 million confirmed cases in Russia, according to Johns Hopkins University.
