U.S. Customs recently disclosed that a batch of Uniqlo shirts were seized in January this year because the shirts used Xinjiang cotton, in violation of the relevant U.S. ban.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the batch of Uniqlo cotton men’s shirts were seized in the Port of Los Angeles on Jan. 5.
In March, Uniqlo initiated procedures to try to prove that the material used in the shirts did not come from the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps.
However, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Uniqlo still failed to provide enough information to prove that the items were not related to the products of forced labor in the Xinjiang region, so Customs refused to release the shirts.
On Jan. 13 of this year, the U.S. blacklisted Chinese Xinjiang cotton. Under the ban, customs officials can prohibit the import of products they suspect are made from raw materials from Xinjiang, whether they enter the U.S. directly from China or are imported from other countries.
