The United States on Monday (Oct. 26) appealed a World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling that U.S. tariffs imposed on China in 2018 violate international trade rules.
The United States on Monday appealed the WTO’s ruling last month that U.S. tariffs imposed on China in 2018 violated global trade rules, a World Trade Organization official said.
A three-member panel ruled last month that Washington did not have a reasonable explanation for why the tariffs, imposed after a Section 301 investigation against China, were a legitimate exception to its WTO obligations.
The U.S. delegation, in a speech announcing the appeal seen by Reuters, said the panel’s report “reflects a major missed opportunity for the WTO to begin to address the most serious problem facing every member seeking a balanced and equitable world trading system: aggressive national policies that seek to dominate a wide range of industries.
At the time of the WTO ruling, Washington criticized the international multilateral trade body for its inability to stop China’s unfair trade practices. Some U.S. members of Congress also criticized the organization for being swayed by China despite evidence to the contrary. President Trump said at the time that he would not rule out action against the WTO.
