A new poll shows that a majority of Americans do not trust China to help fight climate change, and that distrust of China in general has deepened.
Only 15 percent of U.S. adults over the age of 18 said in the poll that they believe “China can be trusted to help fight climate change,” while 57 percent said China cannot be trusted and 28 percent said they were unsure, according to a Yahoo News poll conducted in conjunction with YouGov.
Despite the lack of trust in China on the issue of combating climate change, most U.S. respondents said the United States should pursue aggressive strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
In response to the question, “Should the U.S. set ambitious climate change governance goals regardless of what China does,” 51% of respondents said yes, 29% said no, and 20% were unsure. Among those who answered no, 56 percent were Republicans, only 9 percent were Democrats and 32 percent were non-partisan.
The survey also found that distrust of China has deepened, with 79 percent of Republicans saying they cannot trust China, compared with 47 percent of Democrats and 60 percent of independents.
In response to the question, “Do you agree or disagree with President Biden’s approach to climate change,” 24 percent of respondents “strongly agree”; 21 percent “somewhat agree”; and 11 percent “somewhat agree. “; 11 percent said they “somewhat disagreed”; and 26 percent said they “strongly disagreed.”
