The new coronavirus epidemic in Europe worsened, 16 regions of Russia were in critical condition, the Czech Republic imposed a curfew from 9:00 p.m., the number of confirmed cases in Poland reached a record high in one day, and hospital beds in Belgium, Hungary, Russia and Poland were critical.
The Polish Ministry of Health reported on Wednesday that 18,820 new cases of pneumonia were diagnosed in Poland, which set a new record and 236 new coronavirus deaths were recorded. The day before yesterday, Poland used 13,291 beds and 1,078 ventilators for new cases, and today, another 640 beds and 72 ventilators were used for new cases. Hospitals are facing shortages and in some cases are refusing patients access, while mass protests against the Constitutional Court’s ruling on abortion rights continue.
In a meeting with President Vladimir Putin and senior government officials on Wednesday, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Golikova said the situation is critical in 16 regions of the country, where hospital beds are being used at more than 90 percent capacity. Health authorities said there were 16,202 new confirmed cases and a record 346 new deaths in Russia on Wednesday.
In Germany, the Robert Koch Institute for Disease Control and Prevention released statistics Wednesday showing that 14,964 new cases were diagnosed and 85 died in Germany.
According to data released by the Swiss Public Health Service, 8,616 new cases were diagnosed today, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Switzerland and neighboring Liechtenstein to 135,658. An additional 24 people died from the disease, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,954.
According to the Belgian National Institute of Health, 689 people were hospitalized on Wednesday, surpassing the March 28 record of 629. That means that 5,554 people are currently being treated, almost as many as the 5,759 who were hospitalized on April 6, when Billy feared that intensive care beds would run out. In Belgium, more than 100 people died of the epidemic on April 26, the highest number since April 29, and 11,038 people have died of neo-coronary pneumonia in Belgium.
Hungary, with a population of 10 million, reported on Wednesday that the total number of confirmed cases rose to 65,933, with 43 new deaths, bringing the total number of deaths from the epidemic to 1,578. Hospitals treated 3,166 patients, the first time the number of infected patients exceeded 3,000, and 263 were on respirators.
Spain reported 267 new cases in a single day, the highest number since May 1. In the Czech Republic, a nighttime curfew was imposed on Wednesday starting at 9:00 p.m., except for work, dog walking and medical emergencies. The Czech Republic again reported more than 15,000 new cases of confirmed illnesses.
