“Hanlin Zhong, Former Convenor of Student Activism, Remains in Custody U.S. Department of State Statement Condemning the Detention of Hanlin Zhong

On October 28, the Hong Kong Student Activists confirmed that the organization’s former convenor, John Chung, is still in custody at the Central Police Station in Hong Kong, and it is unknown whether he will be released on bail. The two arrested social activists of the former Hong Kong-based organization “Student Activist” have been released on bail.

The group released a statement on social media on Wednesday (October 28), saying that the two were released on bail in the early hours of the morning. However, police did not make any changes to the charges against them.

The U.S. State Department said in an email response to this station, “We condemn the Hong Kong Police Department’s arrest and detention of three student democracy activists and the use of the Hong Kong Police National Security Bureau to detain minors in a coffee shop.”

The statement said, “Hong Kong’s national security laws continue to be used to stifle dissidents and undermine the personal freedoms of Hong Kongers, rather than ensure security. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has systematically abrogated the 50 years of autonomy that Beijing promised to the people of Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. By implementing Hong Kong’s National Security Law, the CCP has abandoned human rights, judicial independence, and the fundamental freedoms of the Hong Kong people.”

Hong Kong’s former student activist convenor, John Chung, will appear in Courtroom 3 of the West Kowloon Magistracy in Hong Kong on October 29 at 9:30 am.
