Dorjee Gyantsan, a Tibetan refugee who fled to Sweden 20 years ago under the guise of supporting other Tibetans in Sweden, but in fact secretly helped the Chinese authorities spy on him, was arrested in 2018 and sentenced to one year and 10 months in prison for “espionage” in April of that year.
The Swedish Security Service (SÄPO) has demanded his deportation, and the Swedish government has agreed. According to media reports, Ganzan, a 52-year-old Chinese man of Tibetan descent, was arrested in February 2017 after it was discovered that he had secretly helped the Chinese authorities spy on Tibetan exiles in Sweden as a refugee in about 2000 in exchange for payment.
The Swedish government discovered that Ganzan had actively participated in the political activities of local Tibetans in exile between 2015 and 2017, monitoring and investigating their political activities, personal relationships, meetings, homes, and movements.
After his release from prison in September of this year, he was assessed by the authorities as a national security risk and was therefore still under surveillance by the Swedish police. The Swedish Security Service decided that he posed a threat to Sweden’s national security and that it was necessary to deport him.
