The Japanese government has announced a three-phase mass vaccination campaign against Wuhan pneumonia (novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19) in Tokyo and Osaka, starting today (17), with the support of the Self-Defense Forces’ medically-qualified officers and soldiers, and the highest estimate is that 15,000 people will be vaccinated daily in these two areas.
According to NHK, the first phase will start today for one week, accepting appointments for seniors over 65 years old in Tokyo’s 23 wards and Osaka City, the second phase will start on the 24th, accepting appointments in Tokyo and Osaka Prefecture, and the third phase will be extended to Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, Kanagawa, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo from the 31st.
In order to support the mass vaccination campaign, the Self-Defense Forces have dispatched officers and soldiers qualified as physicians and nurse practitioners, 180 of whom are stationed at the Tokyo vaccination site and 100 at the Osaka site, and with the assistance of civilian medical personnel, it is estimated that up to 15,000 people can be vaccinated daily in Tokyo and Osaka.
