China Extends Tariff Exemptions on 79 U.S. Goods

China will extend tariff exemptions for 79 products imported from the United States that were scheduled to expire on May 18, the Chinese Ministry of Finance said in an announcement Monday (May 17).

The 79 commodities listed on the annex include diatomaceous earth, chemically pure magnesium oxide, rare earth metal ores, gold ore, silver ore and its concentrates. The announcement said the exemption period will be extended until December 25 this year.

During the Trump administration, the United States launched a tariff war against China, imposing tariffs on about $370 billion in goods from China each year. China has imposed tariffs on some U.S. products in retaliation for U.S. 301 measures, but has exempted some of those goods from tariffs and extended the exemptions several times.

The Biden administration has continued this tariff policy so far.
