Taiwan’s Land Commission in charge of mainland affairs said on Thursday (December 3) that it is discussing the system and regulations for Hong Kong and Macao residents to reside and settle in Taiwan, including plans to relax the restrictions on outstanding graduates and professionals from Hong Kong to work in Taiwan, and to open a green channel for Hong Kong people to invest and reside in Taiwan.
The international community and Taiwan are paying close attention to the development of the relevant cases, and call on the Hong Kong and Beijing authorities to stop persecuting democracy activists.
Former Hong Kong Public Opinion Secretary-General Huang Chi-feng was sentenced to 13 and a half months in prison for allegedly “inciting others to knowingly participate in an unauthorized assembly” during last year’s anti-sending campaign, while co-defendants former Public Opinion Chairman Lin Langyan was sentenced to seven months in prison and member Zhou Ting was sentenced to 10 months in prison.
Taiwan human rights groups have recently called on the government to pass a refugee law as soon as possible to help the people of Hong Kong in the most direct way possible.
In June this year, the Taiwan government announced that it would provide humanitarian assistance to Hong Kong people on a special project basis, and in July it established the Taiwan-Hong Kong Service Exchange Office.
According to the statistics of the Land Commission, as of November 30, the office has received more than 1,700 applications, most of which are related to immigration, investment, settlement and schooling.
