Wang Qishan, who has been playing with Xi Jinping since he was a child, has recently been the subject of much media and online debate for his perverse moves to patronize Xi Jinping. Wang Qishan’s loyalty to Xi Jinping is almost always mentioned at important meetings of the Chinese Communist Party, and even more outrageously, at the Boao Forum, where the international economy is discussed, he denied being the presenter of the meeting and said he was Xi Jinping’s announcer, and that Xi Jinping was the presenter of the Boao Forum, which is the only way to highlight the high respect for Xi Jinping.
Wang Qishan’s relationship with Xi Jinping is extraordinary, as he is not only Xi’s childhood friend, but also a mentor and friend who has actually rolled under the same covers. He is also the first person to help Xi Jinping seize power, if the dictatorship can be rewarded with merit. It was Wang Qishan’s supposedly massive anti-corruption campaign that cleared Xi Jinping of a large number of officials from the non-Xi faction, freed up a large number of key positions for Xi Jinping’s Xi Family Army, and deterred a Communist Party officialdom where no official was without corruption and debauchery.
The reason Wang Qishan is so servile to Xi is inextricably linked to the purges and crackdowns on some of his closest associates. Ren Zhiqiang, who is known to be close to Wang Qishan, was first censored and then arrested and heavily sentenced for his public criticism of Xi Jinping’s autocracy and brutality. Dong Hong, who was Wang Qishan’s top secretary when he was in charge of the Discipline Inspection Commission and was known as Wang Qishan’s top butler, was also put in danger for “allegedly committing a serious disciplinary offence”. Jiang Liangchao, a former member of Wang Qishan’s staff, was also previously removed from his post for no apparent reason.
According to the unspoken rules of the CCP officialdom, this situation undoubtedly indicates that Wang Qishan is in a bad situation. When Ren initially criticized the party media for mocking Xi Jinping’s party name, he was only dealt with in a way that did not hurt the party discipline. There is talk in the community that it was Wang Qishan’s connections that allowed Ren, a schoolmate and friend, to get away with it. The fact that the government has not been able to get rid of the problem is also a sign of discontent and warning. This basically confirms that Wang Qishan’s protection of Ren Zhiqiang is not an empty cave.
The fact that Wang Qishan’s former and former top secretaries were either jailed or in danger within a short period of time is something that should not be underestimated in the rules of the Chinese Communist Party officialdom. As long as a senior CCP official is with the right master, no matter how treacherous he or she is, he or she is as stable as a mountain. Zhang Chunqiao and Chen Yonggui were actually traitors and traitors, but they were not worth mentioning to Mao Zedong. For Xi Jinping, who is far ahead of Mao’s gangsters, pursuing officials for corruption and debauchery is just a means to cleanse his faction and cultivate cronies. In the name of punishing Wang Qishan’s former and former top secretaries for corruption, there is no one who does not feel the true intention of this pointing in the official circles of the Chinese Communist Party where no official is corrupt and promiscuous.
Wang Qishan, faced with such a dangerous official situation, resorted to self-deprecation and shamelessly touting the dictatorial tyrant in order to save himself, which is also the usual and effective means of survival in the CCP officialdom. Just look at how Deng Xiaoping praised Mao Zedong and degraded himself, escaping from the disaster and survived until Mao Zedong died, finally survived to become the emperor in power, you can appreciate the three tastes. And Liu Shaoqi although also forced to Mao to admit their mistakes, but not yet derogatory to the satisfaction of Mao, and finally to die without a burial place. Wang Qishan, who has been immersed in the CCP’s official power struggle and has developed a golden mask, is only repeating the same self-deprecation and praise of powerful officials in the history of the CCP.
Whether Wang Qishan’s praise of Xi Jinping is heartfelt or not cannot be ruled out completely, because after all, Stockholm syndrome is a social phenomenon. In order to maintain the continuation of the CCP’s authoritarian dictatorship, one cannot rule out that there are true believers who believe that maintaining a dictatorship that is set in stone is a necessary safeguard for the authoritarian regime. It is only doubtful how much of Wang Qishan’s experience and knowledge of a bloodthirsty tyrant who only knows how to wear broad clothes is for the maintenance of the CCP’s violent regime. How much is greed for power and fear of self-preservation? I’m afraid Wang Qishan can’t tell inside.
However, given Wang Qishan’s extreme praise for Xi Jinping, the element of praise and killing is also hidden, so it is difficult to exclude the implication that such praise is digging a hole and backfiring. When Zhao Ziyang told Gorbachev that the real helmsman of the CCP was Deng Xiaoping, Deng regarded it as an explicit praise with a hidden agenda, which in fact exposed the secret inner workings of the CCP and dumped the blame on Deng Xiaoping. This time, Wang Qishan’s self-proclaimed role as Xi Jinping’s curator has a double-edged sword that hurts both inside and outside the society. Of course, such a touting of Xi Jinping has the effect of reinforcing the fear of dictatorship, but it also has the effect of making Xi so crazy that even his friends and the most instrumental people who helped him dictate can only look up to him and live in fear. This will make many people disgusted with Xi Jinping, and it also reveals the danger of infighting in the CCP’s decision-making hierarchy.
