Former Israeli Ambassador Rebukes Media: Equating Democracies with Terrorist Organizations

Former Israeli Ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer said on Friday (May 14) that the international media, including the U.S. media, is not objective in its coverage of the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but rather has a clear bias in equating the Hamas terrorist organization with a democratic country like Israel.

On Friday, on Fox News Channel’s “Life, Liberty & Levin,” host Mark Levin said media coverage of the Israeli missile attack on Hamas is now “expected,” Fox News reported Sunday. The media is now reporting on Hamas as “expected.

Levin noted that the media is treating the terrorist groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad (Jahad) the same way it treats Israel. Israel is trying to strike at military targets of terrorist groups set up in densely populated areas, while the terrorists are clearly targeting Israeli population centers.

When asked for his thoughts, Delmer said the reporting was “shameful” and actually endangered Palestinian civilians because, by failing to properly analyze what is happening in the Middle East, “terrorists are …… putting their arsenal of rockets, missiles, weapons, bombs and drones into civilian areas.”

“There is no moral equivalence between terrorist organizations and the democratic state of Israel,” Delmer said.

He noted that as far as the U.S. media is concerned, their coverage of Palestinian attacks on Israel is the same as foreign media coverage of Al Qaeda attacks on U.S. soil, assuming that terrorists and Americans are on the same moral level.

“I would ask the American people what they would think if foreign governments or international media equated the United States with al Qaeda or the United States with the Islamic State (ISIS).” “I think Israelis are disgusted by this because there is no moral equivalence between the terrorist organization and the democratic state of Israel,” said the U.S.-born Delmer.

Delmer noted that while Palestinians are launching attacks on Israeli civilian areas, the Israeli response has been carefully planned to minimize civilian casualties and target only Palestinian government or military targets.

However, it is difficult to avoid casualties because terrorists are embedding military sites in residential areas, and the media is reporting with intent. Delmer said Israel is doing everything it can to keep Palestinian civilians out of harm’s way, but Hamas’ reliance on the international media to place all the blame on Israel will force the international community to act against Israel, stop it and try to pressure it “to stop us from doing what we have to do to fight terrorism.”

Levin also said that the media makes Hamas “look like the victim” even though they carry out unprovoked heavy weapon attacks.

Delmer also told Levin that if Israel were to try to kill Palestinian civilians, the deaths would not be in the hundreds or the thousands, “with the amount of firepower we have and the amount of munitions we put in Gaza, you would have tens or hundreds of thousands of people dead.”

The reason Israel doesn’t do this, Delmer noted, is because it doesn’t want to, “but the media is very lazy about telling the story.”

He concluded by saying that Israel is a proud and sovereign nation and “we will defend ourselves like any other sovereign nation.”
