The People’s Court of Yucheng City, Shandong Province, held a hearing on Friday (14) on the case of a 22-year-old woman, Fang Yang Yang, who was abused and killed by her in-laws. The three defendants were convicted of intentional injury, and the main offender, Zhang Jilin, was sentenced to 11 years in prison, the accomplice, Liu Lanying, was sentenced to six years in prison, and the husband of the deceased, Zhang C, was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison, suspended for three years.
Yang Lan, the mother of the litigation agent Fang Yang Yang, pointed out that on January 24, 2017 the Fang woman registered her marriage with Zhang C and lived with her parents Zhang Jilin and Liu Lanying, but the man’s family was dissatisfied with her because the Fang did not have children and other reasons. During the period from August 2018 to January 2019, the in-laws repeatedly beat her body and punished her with freezing and starvation, resulting in Fang’s daughter’s severe malnutrition, weakness, and multiple frostbite all over her body. By January 31 of the previous year, Zhang Jilin and Liu Lanying beat their daughter-in-law with wooden sticks a total of four times respectively, and Fang fainted for degrees before being sent to the hospital to confirm her death.
The doctor said after identification that Fang died of traumatic hemorrhagic shock due to severe malnutrition and violent blows from blunt objects; trauma was the main cause of death, and severe malnutrition and cold frostbite were secondary causes of death. The court found that the acts of the three defendants constituted the crime of intentional injury and abuse, but they truthfully confessed the facts of the crime, and reached an agreement with the victim’s next of kin on compensation and understanding; in view of the repentance and voluntary plea of guilty and punishment, the above sentence was imposed lightly in accordance with the law.
