USGS: 7.0 magnitude earthquake hits western Turkey

A massive 7.0 earthquake struck off the western coast of Turkey today, with preliminary reports of building damage but no injuries, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicenter of the quake was 14 kilometers from the town of Neon Karlovasion on the Greek Aegean island of Samos, the USGS said.

The Turkish government’s disaster response authority, AFAD, reported that the quake was 6.6 on the scale of the earthquake, with a depth of 16.5 kilometers.
