Pompeo criticized Beijing for violating the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration and the Chinese Communist Party for joining with their agents in Hong Kong to undermine Hong Kong’s autonomy and respect for human rights and to suppress freedom of peaceful assembly and expression. Pompeo reiterated that “the United States stands with the people of Hong Kong”.
