Chinese economist Ren Zeping
In response to the official release of the 7th national census results, Chinese economist Ren Zeping called for the urgent liberalization of childbirth and the opening of the third child first. He also called for accelerating the construction of a “fertility support system” so that people can “afford to give birth and raise children”.
Ren Zeping also said that the census results and research also show that China’s population “aging, fewer children, not married” has ‘accelerated arrival. In the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021 to 2025), these three major problems will not only come to the fore, but the population will even fall into negative growth, which is one of the biggest gray rhinoceroses for China’s economic and social development.
According to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, after the official release of the census results, Ren Zeping, currently the chief economist of Soochow Securities, made a 10-point comment referring to the above. He also stressed that it is time for China to fully liberalize childbirth, which is related to the prosperous development of the country, the civilized progress of the society, and the happiness of every person and family.
Ren Zeping pointed out that the census results show that China is aging at an unprecedented rate and scale, and the baby boomers born between 1962 and 1976 are accelerating into old age and dropping out of the labor market, “how much of a demographic dividend has been enjoyed in the front, and how much of an aging burden will be carried in the back”, and that China is moving from the past decades of China is moving from a period of demographic dividend to a period of demographic burden.
Ren Zeping suggested that the Communist Party should increase the supply of childcare services and raise the rate of children aged 0 to 3 years old from the current 4 percent to 40 percent, and further improve the protection of women’s employment rights and interests, and strengthen the protection of equal rights for non-marital births.
He also suggested that CCP officials should actively respond to the aging population by creating high-quality elderly service products and systems, building an age-friendly society, and extending the legal retirement age in a timely and appropriate manner.
In addition to population growth and structural problems, Ren also mentioned that China’s social class mobility has slowed down, the phenomenon of the rich second generation, the poor second generation, and the difficulty of producing noble children from poor families is prominent, the proportion of admissions to prestigious schools from rural and poor families continues to decline, and high housing prices inhibit social class mobility and young people’s dreams of struggle.
