Seven pan-democrats arrested in Hong Kong

Hong Kong police on Sunday arrested seven pan-democrats for their involvement in a push and shove earlier this year during a standoff between pro-democracy and pro-Beijing lawmakers.

Hong Kong media reported that those arrested included four current lawmakers and two former lawmakers.

Hong Kong police said in a statement that six men and one woman were detained on suspicion of contempt and interfering with lawmakers. The police statement did not name the men.

The statement said the arrests were part of an investigation into what happened at a meeting of legislators on May 8 of this year, when pro-democracy lawmakers stormed the president’s office. At that time, democratic lawmakers rushed toward the president’s seat, and security guards present pushed them back.

The security guards carried several lawmakers out of the meeting, including Kathleen Chu and Chen Zhiquan, who have since stepped down from their posts. They both later stepped down from their positions as senators.

Chen said via Twitter that he was arrested at 7 a.m. Sunday morning. Hong Kong media reported that Kaidi Chu was also arrested.
