Former South Korean President Lee Myung-bak jailed today until he is 95 years old.

Former South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, who was sentenced to 17 years in prison for corruption and bribery in a final trial on Oct. 29, arrived at the Eastern Seoul Detention Center this afternoon to serve his sentence until his release from prison in 2036 at the age of 95.

He was transferred to the Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office at 1:00 p.m. in a vehicle provided by the prosecution after a 10-minute identification process.

He will be assigned to a 13-square-meter private room surrounded by an isolation facility to prevent other inmates from approaching him, considering the former president’s status and protocol. According to the report, most inmates would be transferred to the prison after a sorting process, but given his status as president and his age and illness, it is possible that Lee will serve a long term in the Eastern Detention Center.

Lee Myung-bak was indicted by prosecutors in 2018 on 16 counts of corruption and bribery, abuse of power, and tax evasion, with corruption and bribery amounting to 24.7 billion won and 11.1 billion won, respectively.

Last Thursday, the South Korean Supreme Court upheld the second-instance verdict of the appeals court and sentenced Lee to 17 years in prison, a fine of 13 billion won, and the recovery of 5.78 billion won in criminal proceeds.
