New Crown vaccine patent controversy World Trade table to resolve the timing

World Trade Organization (WTO) Secretary General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said today that she wants Member States to reach a “pragmatic” solution by the end of December on whether to abandon patents on the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine ” solution.

Iweala said she has seen “progress on both sides” of the argument for and against abandonment, and hopes to reach an architectural agreement on patents, technology transfer and easier access to vaccines for developing countries.

Briefing reporters during her visit to Italy, she said December is the deadline for such an agreement. Italy holds the rotating presidency of the Group of 20 (G20) this year.
