Hamas fires rockets at Israel after Jerusalem riots

On May 10, 2021, the Gaza Strip under the control of the Palestinian Islamic movement Hamas came under Israeli air strikes. Earlier, Hamas fired rockets into Jerusalem.

Hamas reportedly fired rockets into Jerusalem on Monday (May 10) as thousands of Israelis were celebrating Jerusalem Day.

According to Foxnews, Hamas has been the de facto administrator of the Gaza Strip since 2007. Earlier in the day, the group issued a threat that it would punish Israel for violent clashes with Palestinians.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) sent reinforcements, blocked roads and postponed planned drills because of escalating tensions. Bomb shelters were opened in Ashkelon and Kiryat Melachi, which border the Gaza area.

According to the Jerusalem Post, the IDF revealed that a total of seven rockets were fired at the capital, one of which was successfully intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.

An IDF spokesman said the attack “will not go quietly.

Brig. Gen. Silberman said, “Hamas will feel our reaction to this incident.” He called the incidents “inexcusable” and that “we have many options.”

Israel responded with airstrikes on the Gaza Strip on Monday and killed nine Palestinians, including three children, Reuters reported. The Israel Defense Forces did not issue any statement on the operation.

Hamas claimed that the rocket fire was in response to Israel’s “crimes and aggression against the holy city.

Palestinians and Israeli police clashed last Friday (May 7) at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, a holy site for Muslims and Jews.

According to the Palestine Red Crescent (PRCS) emergency services center, 136 people were injured in the clashes with police in Jerusalem and elsewhere, 83 of whom were hospitalized for treatment.

Earlier on Friday, Israeli forces shot and killed two Palestinians and wounded a third. Earlier, the men opened fire on an Israeli military base in the occupied West Bank.
