The Israeli military launched air strikes on the Gaza area today (11) in retaliation for rocket attacks by the radical Islamic movement Hamas. The violence sparked by the unrest at Jerusalem’s Al Aqsa Mosque is intensifying.
Israeli riot police clashed with Palestinian Muslims worshipping on July 7, injuring hundreds of people and increasing tensions in Jerusalem in the worst unrest in the city since 2017. Hamas launched a rocket attack on Israel on the 26th, forcing members of the Israeli parliament to leave amid air raid sirens.
Today Israel launched a retaliatory counterattack, with Israeli army spokesman Conricus saying, “We did it, again, we did it, attacked military targets in Gaza.” For their part, local authorities in Gaza said at least 20 people were killed in the airstrike, including a senior Hamas commander; however, it was not possible to determine whether the deaths were due to an Israeli airstrike or the malfunction of a Hamas rocket.
Conricus noted that Israeli forces targeted a military operative in Hamas, while Hamas sources in the Gaza region confirmed to reporters that one of Hamas’ commanders, Fayad, was killed.
