Start with the Internet

My computer isn’t connected to the Internet yet, and I’ve thought about getting connected to the Internet. It is said that there is a proliferation of pornography on the Internet, and some reactionary stuff is spreading, which scares me. Someone suggested some time ago that there should be restrictions on the Internet, and I’m all for it. Honestly, how can we allow the free dissemination of information? But if I knew anything about the matter, I’d say: there’s no way to restrict it except to cut it off with a snip. That stuff is too fast, too evil. It’s so difficult to censor information in this modern world that it’s better to ban it than to make it easy. If I were in business, or in technology, it would be difficult for me to do without the Internet. But why do I have to worry about businessmen and engineers? On the Information Superhighway, vast amounts of information are flowing. But I, a grid crawler, didn’t know they could work. So, cut out the Internet and save me the trouble of hearing about it.

The Internet is a tool for transmitting information. There are also tools for processing information, namely the various personal computers. Think about it, without computers, you can’t even connect to the Internet. Besides, there are enough disks and CD-ROMs to sell pornography. You have to ban computers, that’s the cure. I’m a bit reluctant to part with it this time – I bought a PC about ten years ago. Now I’m on my fifth one. It cost a lot of money and a lot of work, and now I write all the software I use. I use it to write articles and do scientific work: arithmetic, statistics – by the way, using a computer for statistics is a blessing, and without a computer, statistics is a huge pain. But it didn’t learn well, so it took up drug trafficking, which was its own death, and no one could save it. For the sake of ten years old friendship, I will say a few words for it: early computers were harmless. That kind of air conditioner is like a giant thing to calculate the problem rattling, not capable of demonstrating the yellow poison. It was the later 486s and 586s that were guilty: these machines were capable of doing both good and bad things by leaps and bounds: ban it …… but now you have to buy obsolete computers, and you may not be able to. For this reason, IBM could be asked to reopen our production line to make early PCs. The foreign devil heard the stare and said, “Are you guys nuts? The answer should be: there is nothing wrong with us, there is something wrong with you – but prevent him from sending our business representative to the loony bin. Of course, if the decision is made to ban all computers, I can deal with that too. I can write with pen and paper, and when I want to do statistics, I can plan my plate. Those who don’t can pick popsicle sticks to count – it’s a little ugly picking sticks all over the place, but – thank goodness – I rarely do statistics anymore.

In addition to computers, movies and TV are also spreading bad information. In this regard, my attitude is firm: I am in favor of tighter regulation. First of all, foreign films and TV productions are incompatible with the national situation and should be banned. Secondly, the domestic film and television practitioners are mixed, and many of the works made have bad …… I am writing novels, and film and television is not destined, but to make a little money. Wang Shuo, Feng Xiaogang, and a large number of movie stars have less education than I do, and I don’t like what they produce. But they’ve all made a fortune. They should be strictly censored – but then again, it’s not possible to read every page of an Internet newsletter before releasing it; it’s not easy to watch a 120-episode series from beginning to end. It would be better to ban all of them. In the ten years of the Cultural Revolution, I have survived by watching only eight sample plays. Unlike young people, I do not lack sound, light, electricity and shadow. I just need a book to read. After all, I’ve left out pop music. This kind of nonsense should be banned first. Young people have nothing to do, they can engage in more physical exercise, not only cultivate the temperament, but also exercise the body ……

Bans like this come and go, and one day it will be banned on me. The content of my novel is healthy, but I can’t do it if I have to explain line by line that each sentence is a good message. Besides, by then I’ll be too scared to defend myself. If movies and TV can be banned, why can’t novels be banned? We love to read, and there are people who can’t read, and they’re in favor of banning books. All right, I’ll stop writing and go to the station and carry the bags. I’m in good health and can be a porter. Other writers may not be able to carry the bag. ……

I’m all for compressing living space, as long as it doesn’t overwhelm me, but I can’t imagine what I’d get from compressing it. Hemingway said this in “For Whom the Bell Tolls”: All men are one, and the misfortunes of others are your misfortunes. So, don’t ask for whom the bell tolls – it tolls for you. But this idea is foreign to me, and I wish someone else’s misfortune. More than fifty years ago, a German Protestant pastor said: At first they arrested Communists, and I didn’t say anything, because I wasn’t a trade unionist; then they arrested Jews, and I didn’t say anything, because I was Aryan. Then they arrested Catholics and I didn’t speak because I was a Protestant …… Finally they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me. As you know, this is not Nazi Germany, and I am not a Protestant pastor. So, I don’t want to remember these words either.
