U.S. media exclusive: anti-Trump Cheney Jr. steps down next week, successor says Trump voters “critical” to midterm election victory

Breitbart News reported on May 9 that during an appearance on SiriusXM’s Breitbart News on Saturday, Rep. Elise Stefanik (D-Mich.) argued that a coalition of Trump supporters is “critical” for Republicans to get a House majority in next year’s midterm elections.

Stefanik will succeed Rep. Liz Cheney Jr. as chairman of the House Republican Conference next week. On Saturday’s show, Stefanik discussed how she would govern if she took over Cheney’s position.

Stefanik said, “Number one, I would listen to voters across the country, and I do that every day in my district, which voted overwhelmingly for President Trump.” Stefanik’s 21st Congressional District in New York State has been an easy win for Stefanik in every race since she was first elected in 2014. President Trump also won this district by 10 points last year.

Stefanik emphasized in the interview that the role of the Republican Conference chair is to serve as a “unified voice” and speak for the majority of House Republicans. The current chairman, Dick Cheney Jr, has been repeatedly criticized by Wyoming voters and congressional colleagues for not only breaking with the Republican Party in January and voting for Trump’s impeachment, but for constantly opposing President Trump’s role in the Republican Party.

Stefanik said, “When you can’t represent the majority opinion of the Republican Conference, you should step down from that leadership position. This is not a position to share your personal views, it’s to speak for the team.”

Stefanik went on to say, “I will also make sure we don’t attack fellow members, we don’t attack President Trump and Trump supporters. “In the 2020 election, President Trump received 75 million votes, capturing half of the country’s states, “more votes than any Republican presidential candidate in history, won.”

Stefanik believes that the coalition of these voters will be the key to the next election and is “critical” for the Republican Party to win the election in 2022.

Last week, Trump called Cheney a “belligerent fool” and Stefanik a “tough and smart communicator” in a statement announcing his support for Stefanik for House Republican Conference chairman. Stefanik enthusiastically accepted President Trump’s endorsement, commenting that the Republican Party’s focus is on “firing Losey.

In an interview with Breitbart News, the New York Republican reiterated that if he were to serve as conference chairman, “my other focus would be to oppose Biden’s destructive radical policies and Pelosi’s socialist policies. The more infighting at the Republican Conference, the more it will keep us from focusing on Americans’ frustration with Biden’s dangerous tenure.”

Stefanik added, “America’s voters want someone who will stand strong and fight on their behalf with a clear message about what’s at stake.”
