Chad military announces defeat of rebels, war kills president

On Sunday (May 9), the Chadian military claimed victory in the weeks-long battle with rebels in the north.

Army Chief of General Staff Abakar Abdelkerim Daoud: “We brought back prisoners and their equipment. We cleared all the areas they had infiltrated, and I can guarantee that the whole territory is safe.”

There was no response from the rebel group Front de Concertation pour le Changement au Tchad (FACT).

At a military base in Chad’s capital, N’Djamena, the military had dozens of prisoners of war sit on the ground to show the media the results of their victory.

Chad is one of the world’s poorest countries, and former President Idriss Deby, who has held power since 1990, has silenced all opposition for 30 years.

Rebel forces hiding in Libya crossed the border from in April this year to claim Déby. Déby personally commanded the government forces to counterattack and died of his wounds, passing away on April 20.
