A businesswoman in Yunnan has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the first instance after repeatedly injecting pesticides into her ex-husband’s oral fluids, causing his death.

Wang Yongjun, a businesswoman with several enterprises under her name, injected dichlorvos into Zhao Wanjun’s infusion bottle while her 52-year-old ex-husband was asleep in the hospital, and was discovered by medical staff. Wang Yongjun drugged her ex-husband several times, which led to the case.

The Dali Prefecture Intermediate People’s Court in Yunnan recently made a first instance verdict on the case, Wang Yongjun committed intentional homicide and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

The verdict shows that the 1974-born Wang Yongjun and Zhao Wanjun registered their marriage on September 9, 2005 and had a daughter. According to reports, the verdict shows that the court found that Wang Yongjun and Zhao Wanjun still live together as husband and wife after divorce, Zhao Wanjun is too dictatorial in the company’s operation, often scolded Wang Yongjun in public, and because of the conflicts accumulated in daily life, Wang Yongjun had the idea of revenge against Zhao Wanjun.

In addition to injecting dichlorvos into the infusion bottle, the court also found that Wang Yongjun repeatedly mixed the pesticide containing paraquat into the oral solution for Zhao Wanjun, which eventually caused his multi-organ damage and organ failure death.

According to the report, the verdict shows that Zhao Wanjun’s current wife and three minor children filed a civil claim against Wang Yongjun for more than 140 million yuan. However, the first trial ruled that Wang Yongjun compensated a total of 572,353.30 yuan for costs related to the incidental civil lawsuit.
