On Election Day, several major roads in downtown Washington, D.C., were blocked and surrounding stores were boarded up in anticipation of possible demonstrations.
Stores a few blocks from the White House have been boarded up in their windows as a precautionary measure to avoid protest unrest on Election Day.
In May of this year, the death of Floyd, an African-American man, sparked protests across the United States and damaged many businesses, so stores are bracing themselves for possible protests this election.
Not only were businesses equipped with protective gear, but non-retractable fences were also installed around the White House. Each election day, the Washington police department increases security measures to prevent possible disruptions from the protests. This year, due to the neo-crown epidemic, election results may not be announced on Election Day, so the police department is prepared to increase security in the coming days.
The Washington police chief said he has not received any information about threats of violence, but there have been several requests for permits to protest. The Washington activist group Shutdown DC will hold a rally at Black Lives Matter Square on Tuesday afternoon into the late evening.

The George Washington University downtown also reminded students to stock up on a week’s worth of food at home and to cut back on eating out during election week for safety.
