The Breitbart News reported on May 7 that Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt, a Republican, signed a bill Friday that would ban the teaching of Critical Race Theory (CRT) in Oklahoma public schools.
Critical race theory, based on Marxism, asserts that all social and cultural issues should be viewed through the lens of race and racial identity. Critics say this emphasis on identity politics not only fails to unite the population, but creates greater divisions.
In a video statement on Twitter, Gov. Stitt said, “As governor, I firmly believe that every taxpayer dollar should not be used to define and divide Oklahoma’s young people by race or gender. That’s what this bill supports for public education. “
Stitt read Bill 1775, “No teacher shall require one race or gender to be inherently superior to another race or gender, nor shall he or she make it part of the curriculum.”
The governor explained that the Oklahoma City bombing, the Tulsa Race Massacre and the Oklahoma City lunch counter sit-ins, historical events that should be part of the school These historical events should be part of the school curriculum, but should be taught “without labeling young children as oppressors and without guilt or shame based on race or gender.
Governor Stitt continued, “At a time when we are already so polarized, we can’t allow the centuries-old thinking to resurface that someone is less valuable or inherently racist because of the color of their skin. Martin Luther King Jr. once said that one day, in America, people will be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Oklahoma House Bill 1775, codifies this concept because many of us believe in our hearts, including me as governor, that we will not allow government-funded basic education to make impressionable minds define themselves by gender or race. “
